Vital Aftercare Tips for Laser Hair Removal

How to Treat Your Newly-Smooth Skin

Laser hair removal is, by far, one of the most popular beauty treatments here in Ireland, and it’s not difficult to see why. It is one of the most efficient methods available for people to remove unwanted hair, and can be done on almost any part of the body. After three to six sessions, the vast majority of clients will experience up to 90% hair reduction in their chosen area permanently.

With a nod to this meteoric rise in the demand for laser hair removal in recent years, it’s important for consumers to be aware that there are some aftercare tips which most people forget or ignore, so our team of skincare and hair removal experts have put together a short guide to ensure that you have as few problems as possible following your course of hair removal sessions.

1. Avoid Submerging the Area in Water

One of the core functions of the laser hair removal process is that it targets the melanin in the hair follicles found in the skin. Because the laser has directly targeted the skin, the natural pores in your body will be more open than usual, meaning you should be on high alert to ensure you’re giving the treated area space and time to heal away from potentially damaging rays.

Open pores are an easy way for bacteria to enter your skin and body, and this may result in some negative side effects if you go swimming in a pool or the sea. In addition, stay away from steam rooms or saunas as well as baths for at least 48 hours while your skin recovers.

2. Stay Out of the Sun

We all know that Irish girls love a holiday, sure who doesn’t?! But sun exposure is a major no-no in the days after your laser treatment, that means no sunbathing, no sunbeds and no alternative tanning methods!

With the weather we’ve been having in recent months and with many of us still jetting off across the globe to catch some more rays before the gloomy Irish Winter kicks in, it’s vital to ensure you’re taking adequate precaution against the sun’s harmful UV rays, and that doesn’t just mean packing your favourite sunnies and a tube of high-SPF sun cream; particularly if you’ve just had a laser treatment!

Your skin will naturally be much more sensitive after the hair removal procedure, which makes it especially prone to hyperpigmentation if you expose it to direct sunlight.

Hyperpigmentation is an usually high presence of pigments in the skin in a single spot, and commonly manifests as discolouration or sunspots. This is easy to avoid however, by using long trousers or tops that cover the targeted area. In the weeks after your treatment, using a high factor sun cream on the area will also be beneficial.

3. Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise!

Dry skin is more prone to irritation and is likely to produce that itchy feeling which is so hard to ignore. By moisturising your skin with natural lotions or creams, you can prevent this, allowing the skin to regain the correct balance of oils and moisture.

The regular application of a high quality skin moisturiser can also help keep your skin smooth, supple and flake-free. After hair removal treatment, try and use a cream that is as natural as possible – coconut oil is highly recommended.
